How Does Orthodontic Treatment Work?

Orthodontics is the process of slowly shifting and correcting the alignment of teeth through different dental appliances made of metal, ceramic, and/or plastic. These appliances might be removable plates (retainers), metal brackets and wires adhered to your teeth (braces), or a combination of the two.

Braces are usually associated with a part of teenage experience, but modern orthodontic methods make for a far less invasive process than in the past and appliances are less noticeable, more comfortable, and work quicker. A beautiful, straight smile is easier to achieve than ever before and available to all ages.

The Importance of Orthodontics

Even though the Canadian Association of Orthodontists recommends that children see an orthodontist at the age of seven, treatment is not exclusive to children and teens. Since the process is the same at any age, about one in every five orthodontic patients are older than 21.

However, orthodontics can do a lot more than fix just your smile or correct an aesthetic issue. In fact, misaligned teeth can lead to other more serious problems if left untreated:

Bite: While straight teeth are nice, your bite is just as important. A proper bite is crucial to effective mastication (the process of chewing). And, because chewing is the first step in the digestive process, any out-of-sorts bite can negatively affect your metabolism and digestive system.

TMJ: Temporomandibular Joint Disorder (TMJ) causes pain in the jaw joint and in the muscles that control your jaw. A more common problem than you might think and worsened by stress, TMJ can be alleviated through proper alignment of the teeth. If you are experiencing symptoms of TMJ, don’t wait. The disorder can cause chronic grinding or clenching of the teeth (bruxism) that can wear down tooth enamel, making you more vulnerable to cavities and tooth decay.

How Long Does Orthodontic Treatment Take?

The average length of treatment is between six and 30 months, but most standard treatment plans take about 22 months. The specific duration of your orthodontic treatment depends on factors like age, treatment methods, and the severity of your condition. As you explore your treatment options we will be able to give you a better sense of how long you can expect your process to be.

Visit Amazing Smile in Langley and we’ll fully examine the state of your bite before creating a personalized plan for alignment correction. Rest assured that our team of orthodontists and technicians will be with you every step of the way, giving you easy-to-follow instructions and telling you what to expect from your treatment.
